What IS Yoga Therapy?

The biggest difference you can expect in a yoga therapy class is the knowledge, training & experience of your teacher. They have most likely undergone extensive additional training in anatomy, physiology and any other specialty areas.  Yoga therapy is complimentary to any other medical interventions you are already undergoing, and often much more affordable. What the many modern interpretations of yoga therapy have in common is an understanding of the vital integration of mind, body, and spirit to heal the whole person. One way to think of yoga therapy is as a replacement therapy, that is, replacing old bad habits with better new ones. As such, yoga therapy encompasses not only the body and the movements we do on the yoga mat, but how we live and treat others and ourselves off the mat, which is ultimately what matters for a healthy and whole life. All therapeutic series' have an assessment portion to record and document both a start point and to demonstrate results. 


Not just for back pain or shoulder pain, yoga therapy, in conjunction with clinical care and psychotherapy depending on the situation, can also ease pain and reduce suffering for individuals suffering from multiple sclerosis, PTSD, and other conditions for which we might not normally think of yoga as an aid. While yoga therapy is not a cure, it can improve the quality of life, and may augment the efficacy of clinical treatment. For instance, in the case of cancer, it may improve the patient's ability to comply with difficult treatments.


Carrie of Fēnix Yoga is your host in this cozy, welcoming sanctuary. As the majority of the classes based out of Penticton Yoga Therapy (PYT) are therapeutic in nature, they are set up as 'week series'  The main reason is so that the registered participants can continue to progress. However, if the class is not full, drop in participants will be invited to join us. Yoga therapy is quite different from your 'standard' yoga class in a number of ways. In a therapeutic series you can expect your class size to be small so there is ample individual support. The content of these series' is much more in depth, and the goal is to teach you new techniques that you can use outside the studio. Carrie has the experience & training to be your guide on your journey to complete wellness ... physical, mental & spiritual.

Pain Science & Management

I have completed specialized trainings in a Physiotherapy based Yoga for Healing course as well as Pain Science & Somatic bodywork with Donna Martin.


Combined with my own experience of living with chronic pain that comes with arthritis flare ups, I have extensive training, knowledge & experience to guide you safely back to a healthier state of mind, body and soul.

Stress Reduction & NeuroScience

Do you know the difference between stress and the stress response? Do you know what triggers the stress response? 


New research is showing that our brains have way more of an ability to continue learning that was originally believed. This field is called neuroplasticity and yoga not only contributes to a more 'flexible' brain, but ensures it is a calm one. And this in turn will impact your entire body. 

Mental Wellness & Trauma Recovery

I have worked in the Mental Health field for the past 24 years in various communities, and actively advocate for the mental health of all.


In addition to a Phychology Degree, I have undertaken additional training in counselling, ethics and trauma specific workshops through the National Institute for the Clinical Application of Behavioral Medicine. I have completed Mindfulness Training with Dr Ron Siegel, trauma training with Dr. Peter Levine & Dr Bessel van der Kolk, Polyvagal Theory with Dr Stephen Porges and the Foundations of Well Being with Dr Rick Hansen.


I currently partner with the Mental Wellness Centre, CMHA and SOWINS to provide tailored classes for those living with mental health symptoms and/or recovering from trauma.
